| 0:00.0 | I'm Brian Lehrer. This is my daily politics podcast from WNYC Studios. It's Monday, June 28th. |
| 0:14.7 | We'll turn to a little legal news now. You know, we're awaiting any day now the Supreme Court's last big decision of its term, |
| 0:22.5 | which would be on an Arizona voting rights law or voting non-rights law, it might be more accurately |
| 0:28.5 | called. And the ruling in that, when it comes, sometime this week, we're pretty sure, |
| 0:33.6 | will probably inform what the Biden administration, the Justice Department, did on Friday, |
| 0:41.2 | which is announced that they would be suing the state of Georgia over restrictions in its new |
| 0:48.0 | voting law. So we're going to talk about what's going on there as kind of a scene setter |
| 0:52.6 | for the Supreme Court decision on Arizona that's |
| 0:56.1 | going to come down almost certainly this week. We'll also get into some legal news that's both |
| 1:01.3 | local to New York and national from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. A lawyer, as you may |
| 1:07.6 | have heard, for former President Donald Trump's family business announced on Friday, |
| 1:12.9 | the charges will likely be brought against the Trump organization imminently. |
| 1:19.4 | And there's reporting that the Trump organization has a deadline of this afternoon |
| 1:23.3 | to argue before a grand jury why they should not be indicted. So I guess trying to get ahead of the |
| 1:31.5 | news by announcing themselves that this might happen. But two major cases with implications for |
| 1:38.7 | others. Lots to discuss with me now to break down these cases is Aziz Huck, Professor of Law at the University of |
| 1:48.3 | Chicago Law School. Professor Huck, we always appreciate when you come on with us. Welcome back |
| 1:52.7 | to WNYC. Thanks so much, Brian. Always a delight. Let's start with the United States versus Georgia. |
| 2:00.2 | What is the Justice Department alleging? |
| 2:03.4 | The Justice Department is challenging a Georgia law called Senate Bill 202. This was a measure passed |
| 2:11.3 | by Georgia's Republican legislature signed by Brian Kemp in the wake of the 2020 elections that impose a slate of restrictions |
| 2:20.5 | on absentee ballots, drop boxes, the distribution of water and food in long voting lines |
