Episode 6. When Lightning Strikes.

So I'm an avid mountain climber. I've climbed all over and I've been involved with a lot of close calls.

I had a helicopter crash on a rescue. I've been caught in avalanche.

Then I'd been struck by lightning three times.

That is Mike Gautier.

He is a mountaineer and an all-around badass.

It doesn't mean struck by lightning three different times.

They struck all at once.

And so the story goes, we were climbing the Grand Teton, highest peak in Wyoming, and we left

early morning and late afternoon,

thunder showers pretty common in that mountain range.

We were pre-dawn.

We were up on the route as the sun was coming up pretty high.

And basically a storm had rolled in.

And that didn't seem that bad.

It was August.

And I'm like, okay, it's snowing, but it's not like negative 20. We kept climbing up the mountain and it's a steep technical climb. The weather got so bad

that it was white out conditions. It was blowing. And we were at 13,500 feet, so 200 feet from

the summit. And suddenly as I pull up to a ledge, I'm looking at my climbing partner, Fletcher, he's

probably eight feet away.

And suddenly it's like we're in a light bulb and the light came on and there's bolts

radiating between us.
