Don Butz, Lakeside Fire chief and San Diego Fire Safe Council president, says we can protect ourselves by following simple steps from American Red Cross’ Ready, Set, Go plan. | 0:55.7 | to take care of their own safety, and that means getting involved with the Fire Safe Council |
| 1:00.5 | and following programs such as Ready Set Go. What's that? There's three steps. Getting ready, |

| 1:15.2 | That sounds simple enough, but get ready to go because Don has a lot to offer. |

| 1:21.5 | The first phase is defensible space, creating a defensible space around your home. |
| 1:24.4 | What we're looking for there is 100 feet of clearance. |
| 1:29.5 | There is a zone one, which is 30 feet from your house, which we're removing all combustibles and limiting the combustible vegetation. Now, that includes a lot of things. |
| 1:35.5 | There's bark or mulch around the house and any vegetation that's lower than your knee. |
| 1:41.4 | It also includes wooden fencing and decks and bird's nests that hang out under the |
| 1:46.4 | eaves, patio furniture, big trees next to windows, and of course, firewood. Basically, if you think |
