And I'm So, Don't go go on here. On January 2nd, 2nd, Shishoni Land and Treaty Defender,

Carrie Dan Dan passed on into the spirit world.

Her fierce resistance inspired generations of indigenous land and treaty defenders.

Born in 1932, Dan spent decades upholding the 1836 Treaty of Ruby Valley. Broken by the U.S. government,

the treaty recognizes 60 million acres of what is now Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and California as Western Shoshoni

lands.

Along with her younger sister Mary, Carrie worked tirelessly to protect Western Shoshoni

treaty lands from mining, nuclear waste dumping, and military expansion.

Because of their resistance, Carrie and Mary endured decades of terror from the US government,

but they never gave in.

Kerry exemplified what it means to be a good ancestor.

She once claimed, being a good ancestor means taking care of the land,

the air, the water, the necessities of life so the future generations may have something.

That to me would be being a good ancestor.

We honor Carrie Dan by being the good ancestors of our generation.

For years, two Western Shoshoney sisters grazed their livestock outside the ranch in northern Nevada.

That area is ancestral Shoshoni land, but in 1974 the federal

government sued the sisters for trespassing on US public land. But Carrie and Mary

Dan didn't take this lying down.

The story of their resistance is told in the film American Outrage,

a documentary which plays this weekend at the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival

in Nevada City.
