Summary

It's with a broken heart that we share that our beloved Movie-Picking Producer, the incomparable Avaryl Halley, passed away last week after a year and a half long battle with breast cancer. Avaryl was a kind, funny, and talented soul who was responsible for so much of what everyone loves about HDTGM. In today's episode, Paul pays tribute to Avaryl by sharing memories, playing clips of her hilarious work, and reflecting on her unparalleled ability to recognize amazing films. Additionally, for our matinee we'll play the complete episode covering Avaryl's favorite bad movie of 2020, Shadow in the Cloud. Hello, people of earth. It is me, Paul Shear, and before we get into today's matinee, Shadow

0:07.7

in the Cloud, I wanted to share some devastating news with you. Last Thursday, after a year

0:16.9

and a half long battle with breast cancer, we lost our super producer, Averallie.

0:24.5

She was not in pain. She was surrounded by her friends and her family. And since we shared this

0:33.5

news on social media, I have been completely and utterly blown away by the absolutely

0:41.7

lovely outpouring of love and condolences that you all have given to her, her friends,

0:51.6

and her family. I've been talking to different members of her friends and family over these last couple of

days.

And I'm just in awe that you all recognize what Aero brought to this show.

1:06.9

I'm not good at this.

1:09.7

I wish I was someone who could just sit down and speak so eloquently from the heart, but I know that it will be choppy.

1:17.9

And I just want you to go with me here as I try to just celebrate this remarkable, singularly wonderful person who was such a part of this show,

1:30.8

a part that you didn't quite ever hear, as a matter of fact.

1:35.1

And I think that's what makes it even more interesting,

1:37.9

that the reaction to her was so sincere and so connected because she is the fabric of the show. Back in 2013, we had

1:50.6

been doing this podcast for a handful of years, and we kept on coming up on this impasse,

1:56.2

which was, yeah, that was a bad movie, but it wasn't fun to watch. It felt like a slog. And we had this

2:03.9

idea. Why don't we reach out to our listeners and see if anyone would want to help us find bad

2:10.7

movies? So we got all these submissions in. And I remember Averill's because she was not only a bad movie aficionado, but she was this

2:21.7

hilarious editor. She had made these incredibly funny pieces for like MTV films. When she sent

2:28.8

me her resume, it just jumped off the page. She had this kind of quirky, fun sensibility. And when we first

2:37.6

zoomed, and I don't even think there was Zoom back then, I think when we first FaceTimed, I was just
