About the Speaker:


Fr. Jordan Schmidt graduated with a BA in English and Philosophy from St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN in 2002. He entered the Order of Preachers in 2005 and after completing his theological studies (STL and Mdiv), he was ordained a priest in 2012. Fr. Jordan initially served as associate pastor of St Mary’s parish in New Haven, CT, and subsequently returned to the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC to pursue doctoral studies at CUA, ultimately earning his PhD in biblical studies in 2018. He is currently an assistant professor of Sacred Scripture at the PFIC where he teaches various Old Testament courses, including survey courses on the Pentateuch, Prophets, and Wisdom literature as well as seminar courses on biblical inspiration, eschatology and apocalyptic literature, theological history, and creation theology.

I had forgotten to mention last night just a little bit about why it's an intellectual retreat,

like why the Timistic Institute stylizes itself in this way,

because, and the reason is most retreats typically are ordered towards the affections

or like what's typically called the heart.

So as a way to stir up like a greater devotion, deeper contrition for sin, greater love for God.

Whereas what the Temistic Institute wants to do with this retreat is not just simply give you

lectures, but inform your mind, present the

truth in sort of a clear and radiant way and the truth precisely about God so as to love him more.

So really the work then of the retreat obviously is here in the lectures, Q&A portion, but also when you go to table at meals,

when you go to the chapel to pray, even at our sorret tonight, these are opportunities to sort

of reflect upon the truth presented to you, both like with yourself, with the God, but then

also with one another and the speakers,

so as to better integrate it into yourself. And this particular theme, I think, is really

amazing. Also, the way it's corresponding with the liturgies. You know, the way of wisdom is

often talked about as a way of life, you know, way towards God. And it's

contrasted, especially in the Psalms, with the way of folly, which leads towards death. So today,

you know, as the leaves are falling outside, as the church turns her attention to the souls
