A decent week for Labour, a challenging week for the Conservatives.

A safe enough assertion to make, I think.

Kier Starrmer received an enthusiastic response for his keynote speech at the Labour Party conference,

and it's clear the Tory's handling of the economy is coming in for a lot of criticism,

even from within the party itself.

Labour's lead in the latest opinion poll is substantial,

and these are clearly challenging times for the fledgling Liz Truss administration.

Certainly, the IMF's intervention last night and the Bank of England's earlier today

won't have helped to calm Tory nerves.

Henry, how worried are they inside number 10 at the moment? Inside number 10, God,

there's a leadline bunker at the minute. It's very hard to find out exactly what they're

thinking. I mean, it's absolutely make or break for Liz Truss. You know, there's talk about her

dropping quasi-quarteng, the Chancellor, in response to the market reaction to what's going on.

But she will be deeply, deeply loathe to do that because they are in this together.

He is implementing her economic program.

If she loses her Chancellor, especially if she loses him after a week or two in the job,

she will effectively be a lame duck. She will be conceding that she

doesn't have the capacity to carry forward her agenda. So very nervous, probably, but I suspect

determined to stick it out if they possibly can. Helen, what's your sense of just how serious it is?

I mean, I think that the most serious thing about it is the feeling that it is an unforced

error. I think there is a sense that governments can end up in very serious trouble

responding to external shocks like the financial crisis or, you know, mortgage defaults,
