This is the Cato Daily Podcast for Monday, February 3rd, 2020. I'm Caleb Brown.

When Democrats made their case in the Senate for removing the President, many of their assertions seem to conflate

0:15.2

US security with the security of Ukraine.

0:18.3

And in doing so, according to Cato's Emma Ashford, they presented hawkish foreign policy as the norm.

0:25.6

From the perspective of a foreign policy scholar, what troubled you about how Democrats were

0:31.9

presenting their argument on behalf of removal of the

0:36.2

president. This is kind of a consistent problem in the Trump era. It's not just

0:41.2

1:29.8

That's an impeachable offense.

1:31.2

But that's entirely different from the foreign policy

1:33.1

implications and when Democrats start to sort of not lie about that but

1:36.9

exaggerated and make it much more about national security I think they put

1:40.8

themselves in a fairly dangerous position.

1:43.0

And specifically not U.S. national security.

1:47.0

Right, so again, this is sort of the problem.
