0:18.0	like a wildfire, intersecting with every person in America. Those four words weren't necessarily spoken by
0:25.5	people's voices. They covered the United States in purses, in pockets, and in the
0:31.2	vaults of local banks.
0:33.6	What were those four words?
0:35.5	In God we trust.
0:37.5	A joint resolution from Congress in 1955 mandated that the phrase would
0:41.8	adorn all American currency as it became the new national motto.
0:46.0	The initial response to having in God we trust on US currency was mixed.
0:51.0	Some people appreciated the thoughtfulness and the piety of the decision,
0:55.1	perhaps especially because those words served as a meaningful antidote to the one thing that many of
1:00.3	us are inclined to trust, our wealth.
1:03.6	Others responded to the Congressional Resolution critically.
1:07.1	Some felt like this was religion encroaching on public life.
1:10.9	Others simply found it ironic that those four words stamped on physical money
1:16.0	left no real impression on the hearts of those who earned, saved, and spent that same money.
1:22.0	The presence of these four words on American currency
1:26.0	raise an important and ancient question for humanity.
