Neville Chamberlain's reputation has taken something of a battering over the past 80 years.

He's been widely cast as the author of appeasement, the buttoned-up PM, who fell for Hitler's lies, hook-line and sinker, ensuring that when war broke out, Britain was hopelessly under-prepared.

Yet according to Walter Reed, this characterization isn't quite fair.

In his new book, Neville Chamberlain, The Passionate Radical. Walter argues that not only did Chamberlain

help make Britain a fairer, kinder nation in the 1920s, he was fully aware of the threat posed by

Nazi Germany and acted accordingly. Here, in conversation with our production editor, Spencer Mizzin,

he puts the case forward for Chamberlain's defence.
