Summary

Derek and Rich take a step back to look at big picture topics, namely whether Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons have improved upon their weaknesses enough, and whether that could get in the way of a parade down Broad Street. They then open up the listener mailbag to discuss the backup point guard rotation, Al Horford's struggles playing alongside Embiid, and more.  Get access to special subscriber-only podcasts from Sixers Beat plus all The Athletic’s content - go to theathletic.com/sixersbeat to get 40% off an annual subscription. This is Derek Bonder, joined by Rich Hoffman on this week's Sixers Beat, a part of the Athletics Podcast Network.

1:11.1

A decidedly different tone than the last time we did a podcast, Rich.

1:11.9

How you doing?

1:14.1

I'm doing good, man.

1:17.8

How are, uh, how are you recovering from the, the long West Coast road trip?

1:22.3

Yeah, I'm a little, just got back from a three game and five night road trip.

1:26.4

A little bit, uh, you know, still living out of suitcase, a little bit jet lagged. We are recording this.

1:33.7

Prior to the Sixers game Sunday before the Charlotte Hornets, for context reasons. So I just got back last night. It a fantastic road trip for me personally. I had never been out to that part of the

1:38.9

country. I actually, when I was, before we get into the basketball portion, and we will get

1:43.1

in the basketball portion because there is a lot to talk about with your 5 and 3 Philadelphia 76ers, which I did not expect to say when we started that road trip.

1:52.5

But I basically looked at it and it was an eight hour drive from Salt Lake City to Denver.

1:56.8

And I started adding up, you know, getting to the Salt Lake City airport.

2:00.4

You get there an hour and half early so you make sure you can get through TSA and all that. Add in the flight, get to Denver, get your luggage. There's, it's like an hour drive from the Denver airport to Center City. And I added it all up. And it would be like three extra hours for me to drive. And I had never seen the Rockies. So I decided, you know what, screw it. I can, I have the three hours to waste. I'm going to rent a car and drive between cities. And on the one hand, it was fantastic. It was rich. It was absolutely gorgeous. Like, it was, I'll never forget when I went to the Grand Canyon for the first time. And it was all honesty. I don't, I don't mean, like, this isn't hyperbole. It was a life-changing experience. Like, you sit there and you're like, I can't believe stuff like this actually exists. And I felt the same way going through the Rocky Mountains. And I'm very happy I did that. The one downside is I'm driving. And I'm a amateur photographer at heart. Like I love, I have a DSLR, I have a drone that I use to take pictures. I love

2:51.8

taking pictures. I had neither of those. You should have done the Matisse story. You actually can

2:56.1

speak his language a little bit. You did a fantastic. I would have actually focused on solely on

3:01.8

photography. And I think where you took it was was better. But I, you know, I have sort of, like, if I was ranking my dream jobs, and this is

3:11.1

pretty freaking far up there on it, which I'm incredibly thankful for, but like, outside of
