Hi, this is Tom, and in this episode I'm going to be going through immune thrombocytopinia.

So let's jump straight in.

Immune thrombocytopinia, or ITP, is a condition in which antibodies are produced against platelets.

An immune response against platelets leads to their destruction and a low platelet count, which is called

thrombocytopinia.

The condition also features impaired platelet production, which further worsens the thrombocytopenia.

Let's talk about the presentation.

ITP most commonly occurs between two and seven years of age.

There's often a recent history of a viral illness.

Presenting features include abnormal bleeding, for example, gum bleeding, epistaxis or nosebleeds,

or menorrhager if it occurs in older females who are menstruating,

unexplained bruising, and patechii or papura.

A tom tip for you, non blanching lesions are caused by bleeding under the skin.

The term used to describe non blanching lesions depends on their size.

Patikii are pinprick spots around 1mm.

Popura are larger spots measuring 3 to 10 millimeters

and echinmosis affects large areas of the skin over 10 millimeters.

Finally let's talk about management.

A full blood count is the initial investigation when you're suspecting immune

thrombocytopenia.
