0:24.7	You open your Bible in Matthew chapter one and the first thing you are confronted with is a genealogy,
0:30.8	a list of hard to pronounce names. You might be tempted to skip the names or maybe even decide
0:36.4	that reading through the New Testament wasn't such a great idea after all.
0:39.5	Look, don't panic, at least not yet.
0:42.7	Matthew wants to introduce us to Jesus, and he's going to use a genealogy to do it.
0:48.3	Why is he doing this?
0:49.8	What does this genealogy have to say to us? Well, we live in a self-editing world where we can, to a large
0:56.0	extent, determine what people know and think about us. Just think about how people use
1:01.9	social media to present a certain image.
1:05.0	The urge to self- edit isn't entirely new.
1:08.0	In ancient times, your genealogy was like a resume.
1:11.0	What mattered was your family. Your genealogy
1:14.3	genealogy announced who you were. Today people might airbrush a resume
1:18.3	but in the ancient world people would airbrush the genealogy.
1:22.8	We know that King Herod, who was the ruler in Jesus a day,
1:26.3	was consumed with his image, so he doctored his own genealogy.
1:30.8	He removed the names of people who didn't make him look good. He removed the names of people who didn't fit with a story that he was telling about himself, a story of his own personal greatness.
1:42.0	You might say that Matthew is guilty of the same kind of thing.
