Hi, this is Olivia. After two months of being a general assignment reporter at my internship,

0:05.6

tomorrow is my very first day of covering my own beat. This podcast was recorded at

0:11.6

206 PM on Monday, the 18th of October. Things may have changed by the time you hear this,

0:18.7

but I'll still be doing the important work of covering local news. All right, here's the show.

0:24.4

Congratulations. Local news matters now maybe more than ever. That's for sure. Hey there, it's the

0:34.6

NPR Politics podcast. I'm Tamer Keith. I cover the White House. I'm Mara Laiasin, National

0:39.7

Political Correspondent. And we are going to talk about COVID today. So we've got Rob Stein with us

0:45.2

from NPR's Science and Health team. Hey, Rob. Hey there, Tam. So this is a long windup coming,

1:06.4

kids as young as five. And there are boosters coming online. Plus COVID case numbers seem to be

1:13.4

in a downward trend at least for about the last month or so. So in broad brush strokes,

1:20.0

it does seem, but please verify that after an unexpectedly awful summer, things maybe are moving

1:27.2

back in the right direction. Yeah, yeah, Tam, absolutely. I mean, you know, the deadly Delta surge

1:33.0

is continuing to wane, thankfully. All the numbers continue to go in the right direction,

1:38.3

infections, hospitalizations, and deaths have been falling pretty steadily for weeks now.

1:43.1

But you know, the country isn't out of the woods yet far from it. More than 80,000 people are still

1:48.5

catching the virus every day. More than 1200 are still dying every day. Hospitals are still

1:53.4

struggling around the country. Yeah, I mean, I think that if in June, you had told me that there

1:58.3

would be 80,000 cases a day in October, I would have been super depressed. Yeah, I know. It's awful.

2:05.2

But now it's like we're saying there's a silver lining. Yeah, yeah, but you know, we are heading
