The first time it happened, they both heard it.

Not at the same moment and not in a way they could immediately agree on, but enough

that neither of them was willing to dismiss it entirely. It came through the baby monitor.

At the time, their son had been asleep for nearly an hour, which already felt like something

they didn't want to disturb. The house had settled into one of those rare, quiet stretches

that only seemed to happen when everything finally aligned, no dishes in the sink, no television

on, no movement, from room to room, just the low constant presence of the monitor sitting

between them. His wife heard it first.

She paused in the middle of what she was doing and turned slightly as if she had caught something

just outside the normal rhythm of the house.

It wasn't a sharp reaction,

not enough to startle anyone,

just a small shift in attention.

She asked if he had heard that.

He hadn't. At least not yet. A few seconds

passed and then it came again. Soft, close, not loud enough to feel urgent, but distinct enough

that it didn't blend into the background. It sounded like movement, something brushing lightly

against the floor or fabric, followed by a pause that felt deliberate rather than random.

They both looked at the monitor. The nursery was still. Their son lay on his back, arms tucked close, not moving.
