Summary

Americans are being offered a false choice: safety or rights, as though “law and order” means obedience from citizens and exceptions for the government. Sharon’s take on ICE violating 96 court orders in Minnesota in just one month. Plus, Jodi Picoult is one of the most banned authors in the country. Why? She writes about racism, gun violence, and LGBTQ+ rights, encouraging young people to use their critical thinking, rather than becoming permission seekers. She shares how to fight back against book bans, and why we need to be louder than the vocal minority. And Former Congressman Adam Kinzinger joins Sharon to talk about the future of the Republic Party, why nobody has gotten in trouble over the Epstein files, and how you can stay engaged without burning out.

96 federal court orders. One month. One state. That's what Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz of the U.S. District Court in Minnesota, a Republican appointee, placed on the public record. An appendix identifying 96 court orders violated by ICE across 74

0:24.5

cases since January 1st, with a warning that the tally is likely understating the magnitude of the

0:32.1

problem. In an order excoriating the Trump administration for failing to comply with the court's requirement

0:38.3

to hold either a bond hearing for a petitioner or release them, Judge Schultz wrote that the list of 96 ignored orders,

0:47.3

quote, should give pause to anyone, no matter his or her political beliefs, who cares about the rule of law.

0:56.6

have violated in their entire existence.

A country can argue immigration policy all day long, but a country cannot remain a constitutional republic when an

executive agency treats court orders as optional. That is the civic emergency being laid bare in

1:20.6

Minnesota, and it is a warning the rest of the country must heed. Americans are being offered

1:26.9

a false choice, safety, or rights, as if constitutional limits belong in

1:32.1

calm waters while stormy weather earns the government a free pass, as though law and order

1:37.9

means obedience from citizens and exceptions for the government.

1:44.5

More on that in a moment, but first, welcome to the Preamble podcast.

to listen to court orders.

And ahead, I'll talk with best-selling author Jodi Pico, she's sold tens of millions of books,

2:00.6

but is now the second most banned author in the country.

2:04.6

She'll tell us why school boards and book banning groups are targeting her and what she's doing about it.

2:10.4

And later, I'll speak with former Republican Congressman Adam Kinsinger.

2:14.2

He tells us whether or not he thinks the Republican Party of the past, the

2:17.9

party of John McCain and Mitt Romney, is ever coming back.
