Summary

October 7th, 2001 marks the beginning of the bombing campaign against Taliban forces. Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) caused havoc in Afghanistan, adding a new form of warfare to conflict. As we reach the 20th anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan, James is joined by Patrick Bury. Patrick is a former captain in the Royal Irish Regiment who served in Sangin, Afghanistan. Patrick takes us through his first-hand, personal experiences and encounters with IEDs as we reflect on the history of the battle.

in New York City. But this week we're going to look at the war in Afghanistan from a slightly different

perspective. There's been lots of reports on the war in Afghanistan from a slightly different perspective.

from the country has taken place over the last couple of months.

And so what I wanted to do was look at a history of the conflict itself

by looking at a weapon that defined that conflict and that is the IED. Now we've got Patrick Bury on the podcast my good friend

Patty Bury and he served as a captain with a Royal Irish in Sanguine which was

one of the most heavily effective places by the IED, the improvised explosive device.

he says there are many ways to die in Sanguin assassinations shoot and scoots from men on motorbikes

Ambushes and bullets and RPGs mortars and spiges rockets the usual but it is the IED that frightens us the hidden

traps of old shells and wires that change our soldiers love for the ground this

ground we've been taught to worship, every curve, every fold,

every crevice, this ground that can save us from all other deaths. In essence the IED teaches any infantryman not to trust the ground they walk on.
