The news on Wednesday of Tyler Thompson entering the portal,

local kid, a guy that produced last year for Bill Belichick

I have a problem with the lack of North Carolina players on this roster,

but that's a rant for another day, I suppose.

But the main thing is the retention that North Carolina needs to have

to build some culture in this football program in the portal era.

We know the portal is a big deal.

We know the portal in and out is a big deal.

But Greg, I think retention, more than anything, is the most important thing this offseason for North Carolina.

It's certainly a big deal.

And when you factor in how everything played out this past year

with regard to evaluation and stocking the roster I think it's more important to your point

this off season and what I mean by that is you know as Lombardi and Belichick have both referenced, they came in behind schedule,

and they really had to just put players on the roster from the winter portal session just to kind of get bodies.

And then it wasn't really until after the April session that they were able to start saying, okay, well, we know these guys aren't going to get bodies. And then it wasn't really until after the April session that they were able to

start saying, okay, well, we know these guys aren't going to work. Let's bring in these other guys.

And you end up with, you know, 70 plus new bodies. And it's just a challenge. And you're trying

to build a culture. You're trying to figure out, okay, we saw these kids on film.

We've had a little bit of communication with them through high school coaches and whatever other means.
