just before we started you mentioned a previous novel you'd written Sweet Tooth,

which you described as a muted and distorted autobiography.

The new book, which we will talk about later,

lessons, I think, fits into the similar description, perhaps.

Is it? I did raid stretches of my own life.

Unashamedly, I've generally resisted that impulse.

And I've always admired it in writers like Dickens or Saul Bellow,

up like just lifted whole portions of their life onto the page but then done it with

you know such grace and this time i thought i'd just give myself as much permission as i needed

to do it luckily that i i read the book before i started doing the biographical research for this interview, so I have it backwards.
