This morning I had a sort of offbeat thought and I thought I shared with you all.

You know for a long time we assume the democracy is stable once it's affluent and I have worried allowed on this podcast about

whether that is in fact true. Well it might not be the case that as the

incomes of a lot of citizens stagnate, they become really angry at the political

system and start to challenge it in real ways.

Now today I thought that is true when perhaps democracy is not an end point.

It's not the end point of human development. It's not what we eventually get to and then we just

stay in it. It's a phase. Liberal democracy might be the kind of political system that's

the correlate of the moment in economic development when you have rapid enough economic growth

to have rapidly improving living standards for average people.
