plain and simple. We just keep convincing ourselves that what we're seeing isn't really happening.

We tell ourselves that this country could never drift into authoritarianism,

could never send troops against its own citizens, could never abandon workers in the middle of a crisis,

but my friends, that's exactly what's happening, and it's happening

in plain sight. For example, look at Portland, Oregon right now. Federal forces and camouflage

patrolling the streets. Unmarked vans pulling people off sidewalks, protesters facing tear gas, rubber

bullets, and a military presence that feels more

like, um, Fallujah than Oregon. And what's the story Trump is selling? That Portland is on fire.

That anarchists are assaulting police. That the city is a war zone and he and only he can save it. He's recycling the

same fear-soaked script that he's always used, except now the stakes are even higher because he's

sitting in the Oval Office again and wielding the machinery of government like a weapon against

its own people.
