part of the reason why Rishi Sunak has tried to get it out there, if the telegraph are correct, and I've

got no reason to believe that they aren't, that Suella Bravman won't be investigated over her latest

alleged breach of the ministerial code. And that's a wonderful illustration of how hard it is to follow politics at the moment.

Because if you come from the evidence-based perspective that this lot couldn't knock the

skin off a rice pudding or punch their way out of a wet paper bag, then you don't know whether

to be disappointed, dismayed or delighted about the Suella Braverman news.

If you're paying attention,

that is, because quite a lot of accounts from people a lot closer to the Conservative Party than I will ever be have it that she actually wants to get fired, ideally over some immigration-related

issues, so that she can cultivate a my miasma of martyrdom from the backbenchers

in expectation of defeat at the next general election and then launch a leadership bid.

If I doubted it a few years ago through naivety and misplaced idealism, I no longer doubted at all

that these people live 24 hours a day, seven days a week in pursuit entirely of personal ambition.

They cannot one jot about the country. It's quite incredible. It's not true of all Tories historically.

Far from it. I'm reading quite a lot about Stanley Baldwin at the moment, who's an absolutely fascinating character.
