Summary

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains explicit discussion surrounding issues including depression, postpartum psychosis and suicidal thoughts. This may prove a difficult listen for some and if you feel that listening may affect you negatively then please choose another episode.

This week Giovanna sits down with Jade Lloyd for a powerful and deeply personal interview about her experience with postpartum psychosis. Jade tells Gi about her traumatic birth during COVID-19, followed by a descent into severe postpartum psychosis that required her being admitted to a mother and baby unit and sectioned.

Postpartum psychosis is a psychiatric emergency that requires immediate intervention. If you are worried about yourself or a loved one it’s important to speak to a health professional such as a GP, midwife or health visitor. If it's an emergency and you don’t feel safe, call 999 or go straight to A&E.

If Jade’s story has resonated with you and you need help or support, please don’t hesitate to use the resources below:

And I think so much on this podcast, you know, we talk about maternal mental health and how, you know, just speak up, just talk, just ask for help.

0:46.4

And I think what is particularly crushing about Jade's stories, the fact that she did ask for help on repeat.

0:53.2

And she gave birth during COVID.

0:55.0

So obviously we all know that so many people fell through the cracks when it came to COVID.

I get teary in this conversation.

1:07.7

I think it's always so brave when people talk about these topics. And obviously,

1:12.7

I think for all of us, it chucks up different things for that. Obviously, there is a trigger

1:17.1

warning attached to this episode. We talk about difficult topics, including depression,

1:23.3

postpartum psychosis, suicidal thoughts. So it might be a difficult listen for some. So if you're feeling like it might not be the one for you, that's absolutely fine. It's fine to step aside, like get out of this one. There are so many different episodes you can listen to. You maybe come back to this one another day when you're feeling in a better place. And there's also loads of links that we're going to put in the show notes to some organisations and resources that you can help if you are struggling. But if you think that you or someone you know may have developed symptoms of postpartum psychosis, you can ask to speak to your GP immediately or call 1-1-1, which is something that I really urge you to do. Jade is amazing. She is just such a phenomenal woman.

2:03.4

I just don't think I've ever met anyone in real life
