Summary

The socially-distanced Hacks reunite with special guest John Heilemann of MSNBC, Showtime’s The Circus, and The Recount.    As the gravity of the Coronavirus escalates and the world shudders to a halt, where do we go from here? What does it mean for what’s left of the Democratic primary and beyond?   In the wake of another round of primaries on Tuesday, Bernie’s chance at nabbing the nomination dwindles even further. Will he bow out any time soon, and what becomes of his loyal base?   Reality cuts through the bubble of bull%^&*: from fanning conspiracies last week to a ‘wartime’ stature this week, President Trump pivots on the pandemic. As markets crash and the global economy collapses, what will this mean for him politically?    Lastly, the Hacks-plus-Heilemann dive into the mailbag and answer listeners’ questions on how Biden overcame organizational weaknesses, Bernie and Warren’s fight for the Left, VP Pence’s role as virus czar, and voter turnout trends.    Learn more about your ad choices. Hey, pull up a chair. It's tax on tap with David Axelrod and Mike Murphy.

0:17.4

Okay, here we are after another not-so-super Tuesday for Bernie. I'm doing this from my

0:29.2

bathosphere deep under the Pacific, anything to escape the Satan bug here, which has the whole country pretty bummed out.

0:35.6

And we're going to talk about all that. Axe, we have a special guest. You want to do the big intro?

0:40.6

We do. And I'll tell you why we have a special guest because I can't figure out what the hell is going on here.

0:47.1

Right. The world has gone crazy and we need more wisdom than we then we generate on a weekly basis.

0:54.4

So we had a call in our buddy John Hylman from the circus, the recount, MSNBC. We can't name everything that he's involved in or we would run the whole course of the podcast out just introducing him.

1:07.5

But Hylman, welcome. I got a quote. Let me tell you what's bugging me, you guys. I was trying to think about how to start this podcast. You know, you mentioned the primary.

1:20.1

And that's what we do, right? We cover the great pageant of democracy and we bring that sort of strategist view to it.

1:30.1

In a sense, it's right. According to Vulture, we are nostalgic watchers of the old days of politics. So we cover the pageant with tricky bones. But yeah, go ahead.

1:39.7

Yes, but well, actually, if we, if it is the Gerritel set, just remember, wash your hands frequently. Don't go out. Listen to our podcast. But this is very serious. I mean, you, you, you're the conceit of the circus is a little bit the same.

1:58.1

It's like guys who and gals who know this arena going out and covering the campaign, which you cannot do anymore.

2:08.5

All of a sudden, like in three weeks, the world has changed dramatically three weeks ago or a little more than three weeks ago. Bernie Sanders was the punitive favorite for the nomination.

2:20.5

Everything was rolling along. Trump was dismissive of the of the Corona virus and said it wasn't going to be a big thing. And here we are.

2:32.5

And I think we, we got to talk about what happened on Tuesday and we maybe should get rid of that and out of the way first. But then I think we got to talk about sort of the politics of this moment, the politics of the pandemic and sort of what this means for the process, what it means for democracy, what it means for Trump, what it's now going to mean for Biden.

2:56.5

Here's the most amazing thing though, David. Yeah, I actually think it's even crazier than that. It wasn't it's six weeks ago. We were still in the middle of impeachment. I mean, you think about the way the clock has worked. Yes. It's it's remember that remember that year. It was the end of January, you know, my birthday is January 23rd. And in the middle of around my birthday, we were dealing with with how impeachment was messing with the democratic nomination process because the candidates were not able to be where they wanted to be in Iowa. New Hampshire. They had to be back in at least three or four of them. Five of them. Whenever the number was.

3:25.5

Had to be in Washington because of the Senate trial and impeachment. We've gone from one giant exogenous variable changing the nature of the democratic nomination process. We had a few wild crazy weeks of something that looked a little bit more like normal. See in the sense that people were voting, you know, but even then you had the Iowa caucuses, which was itself kind of a clusterfuck that went off the rails and a totally bizarre way. And then just a few weeks later, essentially the nomination contest has been a lot more than just a few weeks later.

3:55.5

And suspended and I suspect really canceled it some sense. I don't think there's going to be a chance that anybody votes in any more primaries in this in this season. Those postponements are going to turn into permanent things. So it's just it's amazing in this short a period of time.

4:09.5

How much they do it by mail. Yeah. It's mind, but it's mind bending. Yeah, I totally agree. We're in Bizarre land, but you can do it through line to it. I mean, if you start when a, you know, reality show clown with orangutan hair hack the electoral college.

4:23.5

Everything has been a kind or since then, but it has it's accelerated. You know, as you say, we had the Iowa New Hampshire don't matter anymore.

4:32.5

Then we had the most remarkable comeback. We've seen a nomination politics and memory. And now we're veering into the world from impeachment to the election no longer even being in the center of American life anymore. It's like a quiet little side show what we deal with the pandemic crisis like we haven't had since 1918. So it just keeps coming quicker and quicker.

4:52.5

And the most remarkable comeback in history, IE Biden has a lot to do with Trump and how much he's defining the democratic race. But let's talk for a second about what happened Tuesday and where we are now and just dispose of that. And then we could get onto the whole take long. These other issues, but Bernie Sanders was stopped by a man who Raju of CNN in the hallway of the Capitol yesterday and asked if he was reassessing his campaign.
