Mrs. Blanchard's 1979 Dodge-Aspen station wagon circles the parking garage's main center column for the

18th time in the last hour, heading down the ramp yet again.

Mrs. Blanchard!

Even though I yell for her on the next pass too, she doesn't hear me.

A lady in her early 30s, Mrs. Blanchard's hands grip the old

car's steering wheel, her knuckles bone white from the pressure. Her forearms are pressed

against the fake leather of the wheel, while her back is hunched as she leans forward,

obviously desperate to find the exit. I just want to shout for her to stop,

to just freaking stop. But it'd do no good. Mrs. Blanchard is focused, and one thing I have

learned in this job is to not get in the way of the focused ones. They do not have the patience or capacity to hear me.

Their only goal is finding the exit, finding their loved ones,

finding a beer or a smoke, or something that will end the monotony of this damn parking garage.

Get in the way of a focused one, and you're likely to get yourself hurt.

If you can get hurt around here, that is.

The station wagon rolls on by again, Mrs. Blanchard staring intently through the windshield.

The two smaller faces in the backseat, staring intently out of the side window.

Lulu and Jason are the kids' names.

The girl is 11, maybe 12.

The boy is 8, possibly 9.

They watch me, track me, their eyes wide with fear and confusion.
