Summary

Don Niesen has lived in Central Wisconsin for about 25 years now. He describes Central Wisconsin as being a totally different world from where he grew up in Racine, Wisconsin. After moving to Central Wisconsin, he’s had multiple encounters with various types of wildlife, but none of those encounters moved the needle for Don nearly as much as an encounter he had while he was driving to his parent’s house, one evening. As he was driving down a rural section of highway, heading to their house, he was on the lookout for deer. Deer-related car crashes are a big problem in that area. All of a sudden, up ahead, he could see a large, black figure, on the side of the road, pulling at something in the ditch. At first, Don thought it was a bear. Then, it did something no bear could do and at that moment, Don’s jaw dropped. We hope you’ll tune in to tonight’s show and listen to Don share all the details from that experience.

0:14.1	My name is Don Neeson, and I've lived in the center of the state of Wisconsin for about 25 years now.
0:25.1	I moved here from Racine, Wisconsin.
0:27.6	So I grew up in a city.
0:29.0	And it's a totally different world here.
0:34.7	There's a lot of wildlife.
0:36.5	I've had a lot of wildlife encounters. I've seen bear. I've seen wolves. I've seen so many deer. I can't even tell you. Probably thousands. And I had the good fortune of being able to work for a company that owned multiple acres of land.
1:00.8	And so got to spend a lot of time in the woods and get close with the woods.
1:04.3	And I worked on different projects that way.
1:08.8	But what brought us up here originally was we vacationed here when I was
1:14.4	young and spent time on the chain of lakes in Wapaka. My parents, their retirement home is in
1:22.6	Wapaka, and I live there with them now. And I was living in Wild Rose with my family at the time that I had an encounter with something that I really at first didn't understand what it was.
1:39.1	And I was heading to Wapaka from Wild Rose, so coming from the south on Highway 22, and it crosses through a corner of Portage County.
1:54.2	And in this little corner of Portage County, which is about halfway between the two, is where I had my encounter with this creature.
2:04.2	That in my mind, I wasn't fully aware of what I saw at the time because it took me by surprise
2:13.0	because I was approaching from a distance and it was a big curve.
2:19.2	Well, there was all woods on the side and a road that goes up into the woods up to a hillside,
2:26.6	and I was approaching up towards that road that goes up to the hillside,
2:34.0	and I was probably about 300 feet away from that intersection as I was approaching where I first saw this black, furry thing moving.
2:48.2	And I call it a creature right now because I thought it was a bear at first
2:58.0	that I was seeing because it was the color of a black bear around here that I've seen.
