Summary

The podcast crew gets into it today over whether the American people are going to demand and force their politicians to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine and whether that would spell disaster. And we discuss the Republican party's move toward a more familiar kind of hawkishness. Give a listen.

John senior writer, Christine Rosen, high Christine.

1:31.5

Hi, John and associate editor nor Rothman high know hi, John Fox news is that with a poll.

1:39.5

That says that 80% it's either 74% or 80% I just lost the link of Americans support the imposition of a no fly zone in Ukraine.

1:54.5

Now, did they know what an offline zone is maybe not the thing about a no fly zone is that when you mentioned it, it sounds like it's less than more but more than nothing.

2:04.5

So maybe that's what they're saying they want less than more but more than nothing.

2:08.5

Okay, I think it's 74% want to know fly zone 80% want tougher sanctions.

2:14.5

So the opinion is ahead of the political consensus. It's Reuters Ipsos by the way, not Fox. I'm sorry, I read it. I'm sorry it's Roy's of so's Poland I read it on Fox. So it's my fault there.

2:29.5

Public opinion is racing ahead of the kind of political consensus. I think the presumption of political leaders is that Americans are low to get too involved or certainly to get militarily involved.

2:45.5

The question is is that right maybe that presumption is incorrect and is based on a false understanding of the American people and their reaction to what is going on on their TV screens and on their computers.

3:05.5

The presumption that Americans are low to get involved is yeah, the Americans are you know they had enough they had enough forever wars and they don't want to fight what about our problems here and Biden's absolute assertion every time he has talked about this to say I'm just making clear we're not going to get involved militarily.

3:25.5

We are not going to get involved militarily. We want to help them but we're not going to get involved militarily and it seems like the allergy to military involvement may be something that is more pronounced in the in the American elites both the democratic elites and the kind of Trumpist elites of the Republican party.

3:48.5

Then it is in the body politic in general. Look, I think there's an ill fact and yeah, I think there's not a very well considered understanding among the particularly emotional set of people who are reacting to this emotionally, frankly, both in Ukraine and in the United States.

4:07.5

Because I don't necessarily know whether or not the public understands the implications of direct military involvement in a campaign and active campaign operated by Moscow over the skies of Ukraine, they would be pretty grave nor am I entirely sure that Ukrainians actually want that and these are the killing fields of Europe and to transform the country into a battlefield against NATO forces wouldn't be in Ukraine's interests either.

4:32.5

What I suspect is that the Zelensky government, which is lobbying the West for everything and anything, not just hardware, but also on no flies on would settle for hardware because the no flies on isn't feasible or viable.

4:48.5

So, you know, they're asking for everything and we'll get 50% of what they're asking for that's to me in negotiating tactic. I agree with you that the Moscow, Moscow's behavior has snapped the West in particular to a lesser extent the United States, but the West certainly out of its post Iraq syndrome.

5:09.5

There's just nothing we can do to satisfy those passions. There's also the fact that trying to delineate these lines is going to be increasingly useless anyway because everything we're doing Putin is now saying this is an active war.
