Those who hadn't stayed in the hotel did not get sick.

So even in the 19th century, it wasn't hard to see that whatever the problem was, it had something to do with that hotel.

The press speculation was immense.

Was he poisoned?

After all, James Buchanan had won the presidential election against the upstart Republican anti-slavery party and the no-nothing anti-immigrant party.
