Here's some of today's top stories from the Los Angeles Times.

Hurricane Melissa is grinding across Cuba Wednesday after slamming into Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic storms on record.

According to reporters, the storm has been downgraded to a category two after packing winds of 185 miles per hour when it made landfall in Jamaica Tuesday. There, officials say at least one

person is dead, while flooding in southern Haiti has killed at least 25 people and left

nearly half a million people in the Caribbean, still stranded without power. Now Melissa is churning

across eastern Cuba with 105 mile per hour windshour winds, torrential rain and life-threatening flooding.

Cuban officials say hundreds of thousands have been evacuated to shelters as the country grapples with power outages and food shortages.

The storm is expected to weaken as it moves across Cuba, but pick up strength

again as it heads towards the Bahamas and Bermuda later this week. The U.S. has already

deployed disaster response teams to the region, while rescue crews race to assess damage

and reconnect communities cut off by the storm.

And Israel's military said Wednesday that the ceasefire is back on after launching heavy

air strikes on Gaza overnight. According to local health officials, the attacks killed

more than 100 people, including at least 46 children, marking the deadliest day since the ceasefire began on October 10th.

Reporters say the strikes were ordered by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,

who accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire after returning partial remains of an Israeli hostage,

as well as killing an Israeli soldier in southern Gaza.

But by Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for Israel's Foreign Affairs Ministry said the ceasefire will resume.

Israel is committed to the ceasefire.
