Summary

This feels awkward. But, it also feels necessary. In today's #hurdlemoment., I'm talking about something that a lot of people don't want to, and that's mental health. Just over a month ago, at age 31, I finally started going to speak to a therapist. It's without-a-doubt, the biggest investment (financially, for sure) that I've ever made in myself, and it feels really really special. I give you the lowdown on what took me so long, how I found the right practitioner for me, and the awakening piece of advice that she gave me in my first session that I'll carry with me forever.

For this week's hurdle moment, I'm talking about something that was a

0:22.3

really, really big hurdle for me. And that's therapy. This isn't something that is really

0:29.0

necessarily openly talked about on the regular. It's definitely a little taboo. But the thing is,

0:35.0

is that it's important. I share endlessly on this feed and on

0:39.9

my social media about running and exercise and the hurdles that I have overcome being an entrepreneur,

0:46.1

but it is so rare for me to get into the mental side of things to break down that barrier.

0:53.1

About a month ago, I started talking to a therapist for the

0:56.8

first time. I've been going once a week. This is my fifth week. And for years now, I wanted to

1:03.9

take this jump and go to therapy, but there were a number of things that were holding me back,

1:08.9

and we'll get into what those were in today's episode.

1:11.5

I'm also going to share a few helpful steps that I took to get over the hurdle of getting

1:16.4

into the office in the first place because if you ask me, that is the hardest fucking part.

1:22.6

Expletive, totally necessary.

1:24.5

So let's make this a conversation, okay?

1:26.8

DM me or email me to talk. It's at

Emilyabody at hurdle podcast, Emily at hurdle.us. And really, the biggest takeaway I hope you can get

1:35.9

from today's episode is that if this is something you've been wanting to do, if it's something you've done,

1:40.2

and you've walked away from it, whatever the case may be, you are not alone.

1:45.8

It's what my mission has been since starting hurdle, but sharing these stories and being

1:50.0

so open and so vulnerable with all of you is that I think about the Emily that was overweight

1:55.2

back in college and she felt so lonely and like no one understood her.
