BBC World Service. This is Owen Bennett-Jones with Newsour. The war in Gaza has prompted

demonstrations in cities across the world, but in London today, the protests focus not on Israel's

actions, but on the UK government, which has designated the campaign group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.

Ministers did that after the group broke onto a military airbase in the UK

and in another case damaged submarine parts at a factory.

Now, Palestine Actions advocates have promised a rolling program of demonstrations until the courts hear

an appeal about the designation. That is due to happen in November. But because the group is at

the moment unlawful, those protesting in its support can be arrested. And earlier I spoke to the BBC's

Frankie McCamley, who watched today's protest

unfold. Well, it was just outside of Parliament on Parliament Square. We arrived around midday,

an hour before the protest was due to start. And there were lots of people sitting around waiting.

You could see their white pieces of paper tucked into their bags or rolled up under their arms.

People were very quiet. They weren't up for speaking. One person did just say to me,

my sign is going to say it all. Read my sign later. I don't want to talk to the press.

But around this time, when it was quite quiet for the public and people walking past,

people may not have known that this was about to happen. What you could see is hundreds and hundreds of

police officers being drafted in lining Parliament Square. We also heard a police briefing too.

And it was crystal clear if you see anyone supporting Palestine action, arrest them.

So we knew arrests were going to be.

And what were these pieces of paper they had?

They were big pieces of card that they were told to bring.

So we saw the protester briefing too.
