Hello and welcome back to practicing human, the podcast where every day we're getting a little better at life. I'm your host, Cori Mascara, and in today's episode, we're going to talk about the difference between humility and not taking up space. More to come on that in a moment. First, let's settle in together with the sound of the bells.

Okay, so one thing I see a lot of as a culture, or at least U.S. culture, is that there can be a praising of humility. I know that might seem like a strange thing to say within U.S. culture

0:53.9

because it is also very

0:55.7

individualistic and probably the rest of the world is laughing at me saying that we might praise

1:02.3

humility. But I do still see it where in the online space and in person, people tend to

1:09.3

hold up folks who are humble. And this is also true, if not more

1:14.2

2:03.5

another person, we recognize that we all come into this world with the same worth. We're all

2:08.8

humans. And from that understanding, we take a certain relationship to other people, the world

2:16.6

around us, how we relate to one another.

2:19.3

That, however, is different than fearing being seen, fearing standing out, fearing making your voice heard,

2:29.3

fearing stepping into the fullness of who you are.

2:33.3

You can be humble and still have your voice

2:36.8

in the world in a very big way. You can recognize that all humans have inherent worth and you're

2:43.8

not inherently better than another person. And still, put yourself out there, claim that you have something to say, build a platform for people to listen to you.

2:56.1

Those are two different things, and they're not mutually exclusive.
