| 0:00.0 | We turn now to the skies where it's not just the moon orbiting the Earth. |
| 0:05.0 | Laura Barone Lopez reports on the growing problem of human-made debris in space. |
| 0:11.0 | Mankind's trash litters our planet from local parks to the depths of the ocean. |
| 0:15.7 | But it's not just on Earth. |
| 0:17.4 | Debris from everything we've launched into space since the 1950s is clogging Earth's |
| 0:21.6 | orbit. That space junk is threatening our technology down here and up there. |
| 0:26.0 | For more on what's at stake and how we can manage space junk going forward, |
| 0:30.0 | we turn to Marcus Holzinger, Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Colorado |
| 0:35.1 | Boulder. |
| 0:36.1 | Professor Holzinger, thank you so much for joining. |
| 0:38.8 | When we say space junk or space debris, what exactly are we talking about and how much is in Earth's orbit? |

| 0:52.7 | So these are defunct satellites, rocket bodies |
| 0:55.2 | that have been expended and left up in orbit, |
| 0:57.8 | as well as parts of spacecraft or parts of rocket bodies |
| 1:01.0 | that have been up there now for in excess of 50 years and even all the way up to the current time. |
| 1:06.0 | There are about 40,000 objects that we're tracking right now on orbit, |
| 1:10.0 | but there are a lot of objects that are much too small for us to actually track. |
| 1:14.0 | And some estimates put that number between a half a million and a million objects up there, |
