| 0:00.0 | Hey, it's Flora, and you are listening to Science Friday. A scientific mystery right under your nose. Yawning. Almost every animal with a backbone does it. Hopefully you are not doing it right now as you listen to this show. And here's the thing. It actually remains a mystery |
| 0:21.8 | exactly why we yawn. But a listener awakened us to some new research that offers up some clues. |
| 0:30.6 | Hello, my name is Eileen. I'm from Houston, Texas, and I saw some new findings about yawning |
| 0:36.6 | and something about maybe whenever people yawns, |
| 0:41.3 | the blood goes from the, like to the brain or from the brain or something. |
| 0:45.9 | Could you clarify that? |
| 0:47.5 | It sounds pretty fascinating to me. |
| 0:49.9 | Yes, Eileen, we can clarify that. |
| 0:52.0 | On the line with us right now is the scientist who led that |
| 0:55.6 | research, biomechanical engineer, Dr. Lynn Bilston at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. |
| 1:01.0 | She studies how mechanical forces in the body affect her health. Welcome to the show. |
| 1:05.9 | Thank you, Flores. Lovely to be here. |
| 1:08.4 | Okay, so why focus on yawning? |
| 1:11.8 | So we were doing some other research at the time that was looking at how breathing |
| 1:16.9 | affects the flow of the fluid that sits around your brain and spine cord. |
| 1:21.1 | And I had a student who was particularly interested in yawning, and we put the two of them together and thought that |
| 1:30.1 | since the breathing really changes that fluid flow, that perhaps yawning also will affect that |
| 1:35.2 | fluid flow of the cerebrospinal fluid, as we call it, around the brain and spinal cord. |
| 1:39.7 | That's where this all started. |
| 1:41.5 | What does this fluid do? |
| 1:43.7 | So cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF for short, |
| 1:47.4 | is the fluid that your brain and spinal cord kind of float in. So it has two main functions. The first |
