Summary

Our culture is OBSESSED with female bodies and their appearance making us all “beauty sick.” From constricting clothes to anti-aging skincare products, beauty culture eats up our precious time, money, and energy. This is an eye-opening and deeply-relatable discussion with Dr. Renee Engeln about “beauty sickness,” the disease that plagues so many women (to no fault of their own) and destroys our body image. You will learn about... - what the research shows about beauty culture and objectification of women - the performative aspects of femininity - the psychological effects of aging in a beauty-obsessed society - how we can fight off beauty sickness both individually and collectively Renee Engeln, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Northwestern University, is the author of Beauty Sick: How the Cultural Obsession with Appearance Hurts Girls and Women. Her lab (The Body and Media Lab, a.k.a. “BAM”) conducts research exploring issues surrounding women’s body images, with a particular emphasis on cultural practices that create or enforce the frequently contentious relationship women have with their bodies. The research, which has appeared in numerous academic journals, focuses on Objectification Theory, Fat Talk, and Idealized Media Images. She is regularly interviewed by the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, BBC, the Huffington Post, and other national media. Her TEDx talk has over 800,000 views on YouTube. Remember: Though we won’t heal from beauty sickness overnight, we have the power to minimize how much we participate in it. After releasing the gift of self-love and reading all your positive feedback, I realized

1:00.1

that we really needed something to keep us going every single day. So not a deep dive workbook,

1:05.7

but maybe like a micro dose of self-love in your daily life, which is why I wrote 100 days of self-love.

1:12.6

It's a guided journal with, you guessed it, 100 prompts that cover so many areas of life,

1:17.8

including body, identity, purpose, emotions, mindset, relationships, and more.

1:23.9

So you can really think of it as a metaphorical multivitamin, something to keep you going,

1:28.6

or as I like to say, growing on your self-love journey. You can get this journal wherever books are

1:33.5

sold as well by searching for 100 days of self-love or go to mary's cup of tea.com slash journal.

It's my mission to share all the self-love tea with you. So I hope that both my books and this podcast can do

1:45.1

just that. You know how teachers or therapists aren't supposed to have a favorite, but you still

1:56.7

ask your teacher or therapist if you're their favorite. Maybe this is just something that I do,

2:03.3

but I think podcasting is similar that I'm not supposed to have like a favorite guest,

2:09.3

but there are definitely guests that you naturally connect with more than others and

2:15.5

conversations that are just so fulfilling in many

2:19.6

different regards, not just professionally proud of what we're recording, but just personally
