Summary

Today I am assessing the picture on aviation fuel, after easyJet boss Kenton Jarvis added to the airline leaders vowing to fly the full schedule this summer. No shortages of jet fuel visible, he says. But ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend, many people are concerned about queues for the EU entry-exit system. And if you are staying in the UK and relying on rail, be warned of engineering works on several key lines.

Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me Simon Calder. It's Thursday the

0:07.7

21st of May. And I want to give you an update on several topics which I hope will be

0:15.0

particularly of relevance to people who are heading away for the bank holiday weekend, also for half term and perhaps

0:23.8

later in the summer as well. There's been quite a lot happening this morning. In particular,

0:30.5

the boss of Britain's biggest low-cost airline EasyJet has said that he sees no reason why people should fear aviation fuel

0:41.2

shortages for flights right across the EasyJet network for the summer.

0:47.6

Kenton Jarvis has been saying, look, we have loads of fuel.

0:52.7

Of course there's a lot less coming from the Gulf, but

0:55.1

fuel suppliers have diversified and production is increasing in Norway and West Africa

1:00.7

in the Americas. Of course that is going to happen because, well, bluntly, if the price of a

1:07.1

commodity doubles, then suddenly lots of people decide, I know, let's make more of this

1:13.5

stuff and we can get extremely rich, extremely quickly. Who doesn't like a get-rich-quick scheme?

1:21.2

So there's no problem there. I found out from the results that actually in March,

1:28.1

EasyJet reduced the number of available seats for the summer by just 0.3%.

1:33.1

That was due to the high fuel price.

1:36.9

I've also learned that EasyJet has its summer requirements for fuel hedged for,

1:43.0

well, about 72% of them, that reduces to 53% for the winter

1:50.4

season from October through till March. Everything is looking good, echoes the comments of

1:58.1

Steve Heapy, he's the chief executive of the rival airline jet too,

2:03.6

who says we have been very clear about our plans to operate our schedule as normal this summer

2:09.3

and that summer is on. Michael O'Leary, the boss of Ryanair, was saying something very similar

2:16.7

earlier in the week. So do not worry about your
