| 0:24.4 | So today the Nurses Union have announced that they will go ahead with strikes this winter |
| 0:28.5 | and have even higher demands for wage increases. |
| 0:31.6 | James, tell us what's happening. |
| 0:32.9 | So what the Royal College nurses want is they want 5% above inflation. |
| 0:36.6 | And obviously with inflation going up, that means that paid amount is going up. |
| 0:40.8 | I think these strikes are the most, are kind of complicated for the government because |
| 0:47.7 | inflation looks like it is going to be elevated for quite some time. |
| 0:51.9 | You know the OBR are talking about I think 7.4% next year. |
| 0:56.0 | There are going to be big demands from the public sector for pay rises that |
| 1:01.2 | compensate them for that. |
| 1:02.6 | The problem is that departmental budgets are set on the assumption that pay rises would be much |
| 1:08.3 | lower than that, kind of low-ish single digits because inflation was much lower at the time. |
| 1:12.8 | And so I mean it's going to remind you of how difficult inflation is. |
| 1:17.2 | I mean it's also worth noting that the NHS was one of the few |
| 1:21.6 | public services that in the autumn statement were given more money in the NHS and education |
| 1:25.6 | to try and compensate for inflation. |
| 1:27.1 | And I wonder whether some of that might go towards dealing with the fact that you know |
