This week, For The Good of the Order focuses on the stages of recovery from, in my case,

breast cancer, but in your case, it could be any number of things.

But of course, between all of us, we're always recovering from one thing or another.

And I think the notes here apply to all sorts of situations.

Especially before I turned 37 and my older daughter turned three, I was diagnosed with

breast cancer, stage three.

A year later, chemo, surgery, and radiation behind me, I was ready to return to my former

life.

Little did I know that recovery also has its stages.

The main difference, and the other side of treatment, bigger numbers, are better.

Stage one, increased surveillance.

My marathoner friend was in Boston, that spring when the bombs went off, and for several

months afterward, whenever he lit his janky gas grill, the resulting pop made him jump.

Cancer's like that.

For a while, ordinary things feel dangerous.

That scar tissue headache out of the blue, lower back pain could be evidence of recurrence,
