In October 2002, the nation was on edge. Still reeling from the 9-11 attacks the year before,

the nation's capital, Washington DC, was wound up tight.

And then suddenly people started dropping dead. They were being shot by an unknown sniper

who seemed to choose them at random. Because of the beltway that goes around Washington,

they're sometimes called the beltway sniper attacks. Also, the DC sniper attacks,

and they received non-stop 24-7 news coverage for three weeks, terrifying the nation.

Was this a new and frightening case of Islamic terrorism? Who were the DC snipers?

And how were they finally caught? That's what we'll be talking about on this episode of Jimmy Aiken's

mysterious world. Jimmy Today's story is a true crime story, so what should we say to begin?

Well, as always, we'll be keeping things clinical. We will not be focusing on gory details or

hyping the fear factor. Sensitive listeners should be aware that we will very briefly be

mentioning situations in which people were killed, but we're not going to be describing how they

were wounded. We'll simply say this person was shot and then whether or not they survived.
