Summary

Witness the unveiling of Countdown, a major global campaign to cut greenhouse gas emissions. TED has partnered with scientists, policy makers, organizations, activists and more to create an initiative that everyone in the world can be part of. Check out http://countdown.ted.com to learn how you can get involved β€” and help turn the tide on climate. [Note: there are two unusual features of this TED Talk. One, it's much longer than our normal, extending a full hour. Two, it's made up of contributions from more than a dozen people, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Al Gore, Katharine Hayhoe, Jimmy Kimmel and Yuval Noah Harari, among others. We're putting it out there because the topic deserves this kind of prominence.]

Hello everyone, it's Chris Anderson here, head of TED and host of the TED interview podcast.

0:05.8

Today, something different, different, but really exciting.

0:11.2

See, I have a confession to make.

0:12.9

Over the past few months, I've gotten a little obsessed with a problem that can, at my worst moments,

0:19.1

feel like something too big to solve. Except I don't really

0:31.0

needs all of us to do what we can. And so I've been thinking about what Ted can do to help.

0:37.6

Usually Ted plays the role of spreading ideas that matter.

0:41.6

That's it. That's our mission.

0:43.1

So that other people can take action.

0:45.8

But the climate crisis demands a different approach from us, I think.

0:51.4

So today, instead of our usual talk, I'm excited to share an announcement. It's actually the most

0:57.1

ambitious project Ted has ever announced. So let me paint you a picture. What you're about to hear

1:03.1

took place in our headquarters in New York, in a theatre that fits about 200 people, and along the

1:10.0

walls you see projected other people coming in

1:13.3

from around the world. I was joined on stage by my co-host, the amazing Christiana Figueres, the

1:20.6

key architect of the Paris Climate Agreement. We were joined by members of the media and some of the

1:26.4

most important voices on climate.

1:29.5

For those projected in remotely, you'll notice the audio quality varying,

1:33.8

but it was amazing that they could all participate the way that they did.

1:38.0

So look, I hope you enjoy this, and more than that,

1:41.1

that you consider this your invitation to get involved.
