Three years ago, conservative activists took over the school board in a small suburban Texas.

They ended diversity initiatives,

rolled back LGBTQ protections,

and banned books, they said didn't reflect their values.

NBC news reporter, Mikeenbrough has been following the story ever since.

He says what happened in South Lake inspired a movement that threatens to undermine public education in America.

Well the schools are a main battlefield in that struggle.

They're like a proxy for a bigger fight over what is America.

Mike, tell me about the community of South Lake Texas.

South Lake Texas is an affluent, really desirable suburban neighborhood outside of Fort Worth in North Texas.

I think anyone who's ever lived in the suburbs or outside a major city can get a sense of, it's

kind of like the it's the wealthy suburb and it's the kind of place that families flock to to get their

kids a great education.

Who had money?

People who can have exactly.

If you can afford a house in South Lake, then you've, some people put it, you can afford private school education at public school prices.

So tell me about South Lakes Crown Jewel, the Carroll Independent School District.
