February 6, 2023. 417 AM local time. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake levels southeast

Turkey near the Syrian border. Breaking news from Turkey tonight were a

strong earthquake struck. It was a 7.8 magnitude quake that was felt in nine

cities as well as in Lebanon and Syria. At least 17 people have died reported

so far but officials fear that number will rise. That report from the day the quake

struck. The death toll now is more than 50,000 people in Turkey alone

according to Turkey's disaster and emergency management authority. At least

8,000 people died in Syria and more than 107,000 were injured in Turkey. At least

3.5 million people have been forced to leave the region and millions who

stayed are without homes. Well on Monday of this week at a European Union

Donors conference in Brussels, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

described the scale of the devastation. Almost 300,000 buildings across 11

provinces are either collapsed or in urgent need of demolition he said. Erdogan

thanked the international community for pledging more than seven billion

dollars to rebuild. It is really grateful for us to see the same level of

solidarity shown towards us. No country on its own can combat such a high level

of disaster and the participating countries underlined it as well. That's
