Summary

Throughout the year, we find ourselves busy with various tasks that are necessary for us to live and get by. At times, it can feel like we are stuck in a never-ending cycle of doing the same things repeatedly. As we approach the end of the year, we begin to reflect on how quickly it has gone by, and how quickly every year seems to pass. But, what if there was a way that you could use your motorcycle to slow down the passage of time? On this episode: Derek Mansfield is a writer and author in the UK with a passion for riding vintage motorcycles in Europe and Central Asia. A few years ago, Derek decided to take trip to Mongolia, because that's what adventure motorcycle travellers do. Photos and links related to this episode can be found in the show notes. Well, this is the last episode of Adventure Rider Radio for 2023, and for me it feels like the year just went by way too fast.

0:10.0

It makes me think of my mom and she passed away almost 30 years ago now, but when I was young I can remember her telling me that the older she got that time seemed to zip by much faster that every year that went by seemed to be faster than the year before it.

0:24.8

And at the time I was young I didn't really understand what she meant.

0:27.2

I'm assuming she's talking about some unique experience she's having.

0:30.4

Honestly I didn't give it much thought.

0:32.2

Of course as I grew older it became apparent to me that, as it does for most of us,

0:36.0

that indeed the seasons don't seem to last as long as they did when I was younger.

0:41.0

I mean, when I was in elementary school summer lasted a lifetime I mean you almost got sick of it by the time

0:46.7

school started again almost and then fall went on forever and being in Canada winter was I don't know at least two years

0:54.0

that's what it felt like anyway we had so much time as seemed back then

0:58.8

but as we get older the years clicked by quicker before you know another years gone by another

1:04.0

birthday is it's as if we're on some sort of runaway train with no chance of

1:08.2

slowing down and every day seems to be short of hours you know now in case you're wondering where I'm going with

1:14.8

this and what motorcycle riding has to do with it, just give me some latitude here.

1:17.8

I'm coming to a point. That feeling that time speeds up as we age, we aren't

1:22.4

alone, it's well documented by

1:24.4

psychologists that as we age our perception of time speeds up for most of us. Not at the

1:30.7

same rate, but it speeds up. Now although there's much to be

1:34.0

understood about this phenomenon science tells us right now that there are a

1:38.0

number of factors including aging brains processing speed slowing down and an ever-expanding network of

1:45.1

neurons and connections you know as you learn more your brain it expands its

1:49.3

neuron connections keeping this very simple. Interestingly though, this all points to the number of
