What if I told you that the secret to unlocking your dog's success lies within the walls of your own home? I've been using a training den for many years, and so have my students. I’m covering how to use a training den to fast track your dog’s success and confidence, what I keep in my training den, and why it creates a bond with dogs and helps them love training. The good feelings you create for your dog in your training den transfer to the training, which transfers to you, and you can generalize that to other places. And don’t worry if you don’t have much space; everyone can create an environment for learning success.

In this episode you’ll hear:

• About the importance of identifying ideal training environments for dogs.
• The goal of training sessions: build and maintain confidence while we build and maintain behavior.
• Why we need to tailor the training environment to the dog's age and stage.
• Where and how to create a dedicated training area or "training den" in your home.
• The benefits of the training den in controlling distractions and building positive associations.
• Why Positive Conditioned Emotional Responses (CERs) are vital in dog training.
• What to include in the training den, and what I have in mine.
• Tips on choosing the right flooring for the training area.
• How training dens set dogs and people up for success and the value transfers.

As we kick off the fourth season of Shape by Dog, I decided that I would share a lesson directly

0:06.4

from our online classrooms. And I think this lesson in a large part is responsible for the successes

0:12.7

our students do have. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog.

0:27.0

You know, this podcast originally started four years ago in order to help my online students

0:32.5

get more clarity into the nuances of dog training. And the funny thing is, what's happened is, yes,

0:40.6

most of our online students rave about each episode. But the reverse has also happened in that

0:47.3

people find our podcast and then want to be one of our online students. So I thought it was

0:53.5

fitting in celebration of our

0:55.3

fourth anniversary of the podcast that I share a lesson that we share in every one of our

1:00.4

classrooms. And the lesson is all about training environments. So I'd like you to do a little

1:06.2

visualization with me. Think of a dog in your household that you are training the most right now. Now, it could be

1:13.4

a puppy. It could be a rescue dog. It could be a dog you're getting ready for a competition. It

1:17.7

could be a dog that you're challenged by in a big way or maybe even overfaced by. So think of

1:23.4

that dog. Now, I'm going to give you three training scenarios and I want you to visualize

1:29.9

yourself training that dog in each of these three environments. The first one is going to be

1:36.7

a very popular, very busy park in the middle of a city. There's kids riding bikes,

1:42.8

there's water slides, there's lots and lots of

1:46.1

dogs, and you are there with your dog off leash. Okay, our second scenario, it's a dog beach.

1:53.6

You're at the dog beach, it's a beautiful summer day, there's kids, there's dogs, there's

1:59.5

adults, there's all kinds of chaos. And you have your dog

2:03.7

there off leash and you're working on that very important problem that you really want to see

2:09.6

success with. All right. A third scenario, you're out in the wilderness and it's peaceful and it's
