On May 3rd, 1980, 13 year old Carrie Lightner, a softball star in Fairbanks, California,

was walking with a friend along a quiet road on their way to a church carnival.

When a car comes barreling down the road, swerving out of control,

hitting Carrie from behind, knocking her out of her shoes, throwing her 125 feet in the air,

destroying every organ in her body.

The driver sped off, leaving Young Carey Lightner's body

at the scene.

The driver, 46-year- old Clarence Bush, is found and arrested. It has

discovered that he had a record of arrests for intoxication. He is a three-time

repeat offender and out of jail only two days prior from a fourth

hidden run drunk driving charge. Carrie's mother, Candy, is of course

devastated beyond consultation.

And talking to the arresting officer, she asked how severe the punishment would be for the driver

who ended her daughter's life and now destroyed hers.

The officer explained that drunk driving was rarely ever prosecuted harshly,

and the driver was unlikely to spend any significant time behind bars.

This made Mama Bear mad.
