I was talking with a friend of mine recently who runs a very large and very successful

software company and I asked them how he would describe his journey to his uber success.

He said the journey was mostly very unexciting, but punctuated by moments of

extreme excitement.

The few key insights in what he said are this.

Number one, the journey towards any great achievement, be it becoming a superstar CEO or

world champion tennis player, world class musician, or even a beloved parent, is mostly

very unexciting.

Don't have false expectations and then bail on the trail.

Just keep stepping forward even if it's trudging forward.

And number two is this, if you stay on the journey, you will gain those little moments

of extreme excitement.

So learn to stay and master the mundane.

Find ways to make the routines rich.

Turn them into games, create many little challenges within the monotony.

Seek and bask in the little collapses of joy along the long, arduous trail.

And number three is this, no in advance that those few and brief extreme exciting moments

make the very long and grueling and unexciting moments all worth it.
