When you hear “event” you likely think of a large convention or a big stage and thousands of seats. These aren’t the kind of events you need to host. You can start with a meet-up and use a free classroom that fits 100 people; that’s what Ryan’s first event was, and it was a great success.

There are several important points to remember when throwing an event:

1. Be the host. You’ll have more authority at the event and be able to choose the speakers. You’ll also increase your connections because everyone will make their introductions through you. And, perhaps most importantly, you’ll get all the data from your attendees.

2. Be sure to get people’s phone numbers and emails–especially if the event is free. This is the data gold you need to collect.

3. You don’t have to go broke. Some speakers will speak for free just to increase their reach. You can host an event at a bar, or even in your living room!

4. Have some kind of upsale, some product you can promote. This might be your real money maker, and that’s ok! Big events often lose money on the frontend but earn a profit on the upsell.

5. Sell tiers of tickets. People will pay to have an extra day to connect with the speakers.

6. Give people a reason to buy tickets early. Use promos, discounts, and package your event with other pieces of your product. There should be some kind of scarcity involved here.

7. Market your event! Talk about it all the time.

Start planning your event today, no matter what business you’re in. You won’t regret it!
