What's up everyone? Today we are talking about spooky, spooky pumpkins. How do you tell if your pumpkins are ripe?

0:10.0

So pumpkins are a fantastic fall crop, not only for the fact that you can use them for

0:15.0

jack-o-lanterns, and you can use them for Halloween stuff, but they're just a wonderful food.

0:20.5

I don't know if many of you experiment with eating pumpkin a lot but I have in the past and I've really enjoyed it

0:26.6

A bunch of different things that you can do with pumpkin but before we even get to that point we have to figure out when are our pumpkins ripe is it

0:35.1

ripe when it turns orange does a pumpkin have to be orange to be ripe how do we

0:40.0

tell when a pumpkin is right. So to answer that first question, color actually is a pretty

0:46.1

good indicator, although some pumpkins aren't actually orange. In general, if your pumpkin

0:51.4

is orange all the way around, it is probably going to be ripe.

0:56.1

However, pumpkins don't need to be all the way orange to be ripe, and some pumpkins are ripe

1:00.4

when they are still completely green, because they are of course different cultivars of pumpkins.

1:05.0

Another way to see if your pumpkin is ripe is to give it a knock.

1:10.0

So you can sort of knock on it like you would knock on a wall to see if the wall is hollow.

1:14.9

If it sounds hollow, the pumpkin, then the pumpkin is probably ripe and ready to be picked.

1:20.1

Another way to tell is if the skin is hard. So if you feel the skin and use your fingernail to try to puncture the pumpkin skin,

1:29.8

and it does puncture, it's probably not ripe. If it denseure it's probably not ripe if it dense it's probably ripe

1:36.4

finally one way to figure out if your pumpkin is ripe is if the stem is hard so if the stem is hard. So if the stem is hard, similar to the skin,

1:46.4

it's probably going to be ripe.

1:48.7

Hard as in like quite hard, like hard as in the way that a pumpkin stem is hard after you harvest it and maybe you're using it to make a jack-o lantern or something like that.

2:00.0

So once you know that, well then how do you harvest your pumpkin? The best way to do it, use a super sharp knife that's going to slice straight through the stem that's going to help prevent any sort of disease from getting onto your pumpkin and then

2:13.8

rotting it from the inside out because as we all know I'm sure pumpkins are

2:17.1

very prone to quick rotting. Leave a pretty long stem you should have at least three, four, five inches of stem on top.
