You have to, as a teacher, almost helpfully complicate the situation a little bit for your hearer

to say slavery is not as simple as you thought about it. It's not all in one form or one way.

One might freely enslave themselves to pay off a debt. One might be forced in a man-stealing

situation. We need to allow for the complexity of the historical context as a teacher and do our
