Summary

Podcasting is a growing industry with so much room for Black creators to share themselves, their views, and their brands. That’s probably why Black people make up 12% of the total population, but 15% of the podcast host population. But how do you get started? And how do you help your podcast be heard?

Today I’m joined by Nakia Swinton, Supervising Producer at iHeart Radio, Co-host of Sufficiently Black, freelance producer for Balanced Black Girl podcast, and general podcast wizard. Together, we talk all things podcasts — from creation, to marketing, to community building and monetization. We even answer some thought-provoking listener questions!

We Also Talk About…

  • Building a community through your podcast marketing
  • Keeping your SEO clear and easy to understand
  • The importance of consistency above all else
  • The fabulous Issa Rae and her little-known (but amazing) podcast
  • The pros and cons of each type of podcasting and reading contracts thoroughly
  • Having passion for more than the money

If you don't know a little bit about my backstory in the backstory of this show, I actually

0:14.2

started this podcast four years ago, and to say that podcasting has changed my life

0:19.5

is an understatement.

0:21.2

I get asked questions about podcasting all the time, usually from aspiring podcasters

0:25.8

looking for tips on getting started, or from current podcasters looking to grow their

0:30.4

shows.

0:31.4

So for our Black Women in Business series, I thought we'd talk a little bit more about

0:36.0

the type of business I'm running, and that's podcasting.

0:40.1

So we decided to bring it to the show and create an episode about it.

0:44.1

I'm joined today by my producer, Kia Swinton, who is a podcast expert for a special episode

0:49.8

about the business of podcasting, getting into how to start, grow, and monetize a podcast.

0:56.1

I want to say, if this topic is of interest to you, do not skip the show notes.

1:01.8

Some of the questions I got don't really translate well to being on air, which honestly

1:07.6

podcasting lesson number one or content creation lesson number one, know which medium to share

1:13.1

information on, specifically questions about the technical aspects of podcasting, such

1:17.8

as how to actually get your podcast set up, what might to use, how to set up an RSS

1:22.8

feed.

1:23.8

Conversations about that would not be very interesting to listen to.

1:26.8

You would probably forget it when you try to go do it, something like that is a lot better

1:30.2

in written forms.

1:31.2

I have linked a bunch of resources in the show notes that can answer that type of question
